Girls Junior Varsity Basketball, Girls Varsity Basketball · Lady Hornets Basketball Bounces Back on the Road

Daytona Beach FL – The Bishop Moore Hornets Girls Basketball teams went on the road to finish to finish off their regular season with wins at Father Lopez.  The JV set the tone for the night with a 65 – 25 victory and the Varsity was able to shake off an early week road loss at Spruce Creek, winning 57 – 52.

Freshman Taylor T. led the JV with 27 including 5 three’s along with a dominant post performance by Sophomore Kiran S. who finished with 14.  The baby Hornets relied on a stifling defense sparked by freshmen Maria G., Taylor P., and Amanda K. on the perimeter and Sophomore Maria A. down low.  They end their season with an impressive 20 and 1 record upholding a proud tradition of success at the JV level.
It was Senior Night for the Green Wave who were 22-3 entering the matchup.  Their game plan was to take away Senior Reilly B.’s scoring using a box and 1 defense, but  Sophomore Maggie J. knew her team would be relying on her to pick up the scoring slack and proceeded to knock down 6 threes en route to a 20 point performance.   Senior Taylor B. was a force in the paint neutralizing Lopez’s size advantage pulling down 8 rebounds along with 4 big blocked shots.
Reilly B. stepped up her game as well.  Despite being double and triple teamed all night she still finished with 18 points, four off her season average.  Thanks to the selfless efforts of Sophomores Laysha P. and Victoria M.  who both worked tirelessly to set effective screens, Reilly was limited in the number of shots she saw but efficient, making sure they found their mark.
The Freshman duo of Zeli R. and Camila S. provided a significant spark on both ends of the floor fearlessly playing well above their age.  Zeli was able to slice up the Green Wave’s defense driving deep into the heart of their zone, drawing multiple defenders, then finding open teammates on the perimeter for multiple scoring opportunities.  Camila provided a late-game defensive spark utilizing her quickness and high basketball IQ racking up 5 fourth quarter steals helping to seal the Hornet road win.

The Hornets finish the regular season 19 – 4, including an unblemished 8 – 0 record in district play.  The district tournament begins next week with the number 1 seeded Hornets facing off against the winner of the Leesburg – Poinciana play-in game.  The game tips at 5:30 on Tuesday night at Tavares High School.
